Meredith Emmett is a facilitator, trainer, and consultant known for her interactive and creative ways of engaging people in meaningful conversation and thoughtful action. As President of Third Space Studio, Meredith has worked with dozens of nonprofits - in North Carolina and across the country - as they focus their intended impact, design ambitious strategies, and develop the resources and capacity needed for success. Meredith ’s clients include education organizations such as the Down East Partnership for Children and EK Powe Elementary; health care initiatives such as Project Access of Durham County and Project Compassion; and environmental organizations such as the NC Conservation Network, Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Cities Initiative, and NC Sustainable Energy Association. Meredith works new start-up nonprofits as well as those with decades of history and dozens of staff. Some examples of Meredith ’s recent work include: -Assessing the feasibility of the Coalition for Smarter Growth of Washington, DC becoming an independent 501c3 nonprofit. -Facilitating an interactive roundtable to generate a list of policies and programs with the potential to grow North Carolina ’s green economy for the North Carolina office of Environmental Defense Fund. -Coordinating the creation of the Healthy Kids Collaborative, a project to prevent childhood obesity in eastern North Carolina, now funded by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation and the Kate B. Reynolds Foundation. -Guiding the creation of new strategic frameworks for the NC Center for Nonprofits, the Funders ’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. Meredith has thirty years of experience as a leader in the nonprofit sector. Prior to co-founding Third Space Studio in February 2001, Meredith served as executive director of three nonprofits: the Institute for Southern Studies, NC Community Shares, and Public Allies of NC. Meredith has served on numerous boards of directors including SunShares, Durham ’s Environmental Affairs Board, National Alliance for Choice in Giving, Watts Hospital Hillandale Neighborhood Association, and stone circles. Meredith is part of the Institute for Conservation Leadership ’s national network of consultants where she serves on the team responsible for an intensive training program for new executive directors of environmental organizations. She also teaches a graduate-level course in nonprofit management at the Terry Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Meredith earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University in 1982 and launched her career in the field of energy efficiency first as the Local Energy Office for the City of Durham and then at Advanced Energy where she trained energy managers in local governments across North Carolina. In her free time, Meredith enjoys painting, cycling, gardening, and hanging out with friends and neighbors across her adopted hometown of Durham, North Carolina.
