Thirteen’s Tape Archive: Saving our Station’s History The mission of the Thirteen’s Tape Archive is to collect, preserve and make available programs either produced or co-produced by Thirteen/WNET. Our collection of programs spans 1962 to the present, and some of our important holdings include programs produced and distributed by the former entities NET and WNDT, which predate WNET and the creation of PBS. Thirteen/WNET has a rich media history as the premiere educational television station in the New York City Metropolitan area.

Neal Shapiro is an award-winning producer and media executive with a 25-year career spanning print, broadcast, cable and online media. As CEO of WNET, he oversees the operations of THIRTEEN, WLIW21 and NJTV, reaching an audience of more than 5 million monthly. WNET produces such acclaimed PBS series as Great Performances , American Masters , Nature , PBS NewsHour Weekend , Charlie Rose , and a range of documentaries, children’s programs, and local news and cultural offerings available on air and online.

As a primary producer of news and public affairs programs for PBS, this unit seeks proposals for limited series on current affairs subjects of major importance and, occasionally, recent history as well as one-offs for its award-winning international documentary series Wide Angle . Subjects should be of interest to an American audience and, for Wide Angle , to an international one as well. Innovation, character-driven narrative and substance are key.

Before working at NBC, Shapiro spent 13 years at ABC News, where he was a writer and producer for PrimeTime Live and World News Tonight. He served as broadcast producer of PrimeTime Live, where he wrote and produced over 30 stories, including breaking news, profiles, and investigative reports. Shapiro has won numerous awards, including 32 Emmys, 31 Edward R. Murrow Awards and 3 Columbia DuPont awards. He serves on the Boards of Tufts University, Gannett Company, the Investigative News Network (INN) and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Currently in its third season, Exposé is the only documentary series on television to shine a light on the best and most current investigative journalism in America. Each of the original, half-hour documentaries follows reporters on the trail of a story as they chase down leads, question those in power, receive anonymous tips, analyze boxes of documents, visit the scenes, cultivate inside sources, pursue hunches, check and recheck facts – in an effort to reveal wrongdoing by those who are supposed to be serving the public interest.
