Private Pilot Certificate For people who have always wanted to learn to fly, this is the certificate that makes that dream come true! For those desiring a career in aviation, this is the first step. The private pilot certificate allows you to fly for pleasure in good weather. You may take friends and family flying on local scenic flights and to visit other destinations. There are just two restrictions the FAA places on private pilots- you may not fly in bad weather, and may not fly for hire. These privileges require the next steps in the training. You may fly yourself for your own business travel needs. A private pilot certificate can be completed in as little as three months, although four to five months is more realistic, depending on your schedule. Instrument Rating This is what pilots need to fly in the clouds. The instrument training greatly increases a pilot's knowledge, skills, confidence, and ability! It improves a pilot's understanding of weather, navigation, instrument systems, air traffic control, and basic flying skills. For a private pilot, it will make a better, more well-rounded pilot. For those seeking a career in aviation, it is the logical next step after the private pilot certificate. Like the private, the instrument can be completed in three to six months. Commercial Pilot Certificate This certificate allows a pilot to fly for hire. During the commercial training pilots learn new maneuvers, learn about more complex aircraft and their systems, and build a large amount of flight time and experience- this is a great time in a pilot's training Due to the amount of flight time involved the commercial certificate usually takes a little longer than the private or instrument, although a motivated student could finish it in a few months. Flight Instructor Certificate The Certified Flight Instructor certificate (CFI) allows a pilot to teach others to fly. This is a great privilege and responsibility, so this certificate involves in-depth training! The ground training includes increasing the pilot's level of knowledge in all areas of aviation to a higher level. This is important because the ability to teach a subject is improved when one has a deeper understanding of the material. Instructors are expected to be able to answer questions on almost any aviation topic! Instructors also study topics including learning theory, methods of instruction, lesson planning, human behavior, and so on. This helps develop the instructor's teaching ability. Instructors must be able to know their material and also be able to pass it on to their students in an effective manor. The flight training portion of the instructor certificate includes pushing the "stick and rudder" skills to a higher level. Developing these skills improves the instructor's sight and feel for the finer and more subtle points of flying, so that they may provide more effective instruction. We also teach our instructors great ways to demonstrate and describe aviation principles. The flight training for the CFI is also the only certificate that requires spin training.
