Description

The supreme court unanimously ruled today that P2P file sharing software companies can be sued for enabling users to infringe on copyright laws. Crazy. A meaningless decision, there will always be a way to digitally share mp3 and aac files under the radar. But the important tid bit here is that the behemoth recording industry has yet to offer consumers a viable way to listen to and purchase music from their PCs. Apple and iTunes is still the only game in town. This also speaks to the lack of quality in the product that record labels would like us to pay for. We are not compelled to pay for a better sounding, well packaged physical product. Nor are we compelled to pay for a high quality, easy to use digital download. The RIAA thought that cassette recorders would be the death of the LP and Cassette sales, but people still bought the better sounding, well packaged product. Amazing. Also, Kool cigarettes is sponsoring a tour of conciousness hip hop artists. Why are these shows not free? Why are we paying to see Common perform under a huge green Kool cigarette banner (why an artist like Common is on a tour with such sponsorship is another story). This is gross. As consumers we need to realize that we are buying what they are selling like cattle lead to the slaughter house. Maybe a heavy analogy, but an apt one. Cable television, an expensive service, is inundating us with ads that companies are paying networks to play. Gross.
