The Town & County Club is a private, member-owned club, established in the early twentieth century by women who were civic, social and intellectual leaders of Hartford. Today, the Club continues to attract individuals of energy and achievement. Early in 1925, thirteen women had an organizational meeting to form a women’s club, a gathering place for women. Three days after the first meeting, these enterprising women decided that the most practical way to finance a club was by a bond issue. They hoped to raise $100,000 and secure a charter membership of 500. The Lyman House was purchased and the Club formally opened with an afternoon reception led by a professional staff. Within a year, afternoon teas expanded to full meal service provided by a professional staff. Programs developed quickly, and the club saw the need for a monthly calendar of coming attractions: art exhibits, guest speakers, luncheons, and weekly bridge games. The beautifully appointed Lyman House, made more inviting by the addition of a ballroom, can accommodate the needs of members for private dining and entertaining, as well as requests for banquets, weddings, business meetings and other events. The club offers dining for members and guests at lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday, and at dinner most Saturdays. The primary benefit of membership is the ability to enjoy the Club’s major asset – its members.
