Transformation Life Center (TLC) was founded in 1982 by New York City Pastor and evangelist, Tom Mahairas. Tom was involved with the hippie movement and drug culture during the 1960’s, but he had a life-changing experience at Word of Life when he accepted Christ in 1968. After marrying his longtime girlfriend Vicky, Tom (now Pastor Tom) went on to establish the Manhattan Bible Church (MBC) and Manhattan Christian Academy. During this time, he found himself broken-hearted by the large number of his childhood friends who had died due to addiction. Having performed funeral services for several of his friends, including Butch Link, Oscar Aquino, and others, Pastor Tom decided that something had to be done. Soon, his apartment was frequently filled with addicts who had come to the Lord for salvation– salvation from sin and drug addiction. Out of Romans 12:1-2 "...do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (NIV) came the idea of metamorphosis– the total change that can be seen when a caterpillar enters the cocoon, to emerge after a time as a butterfly.
