They independently developed their careers in the USA. Francesco Stellacci obtained a degree in Materials Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in 1998. There he completed a thesis on photochromic materials under the guidance of Prof. Giuseppe Zerbi and Prof. Maria Carla Gallazzi; the centerpiece of his thesis was the invention and synthesis of the first backbone photochromic polymer. In 1999, He moved to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Arizona for a post-doctoral experience with Prof. Joe Perry. There he also worked in close collaboration with Prof. Seth Marder. His work there centered on the development of a microfabrication technology for silver structures embedded in a polymer matrix. In 2002 Stellacci joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, where he currently is an Associate Professor. Professor Stellacci's research interests are in nano-science and nano-technology, specifically in the investigation of the structure-property relationships that exist between nanostructured molecular assemblies and their surface properties. His research focuses on the generation of new understanding on the assembly of molecules in spatially defined arrangements and their interactions with organic and bio molecules and with inorganic surfaces. Stellacci has published more than 35 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals including Science, Nature, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, and Small. He is the recipient of the 2004 3M Untenured Faculty and DuPont Young Professor Awards, the 2005 Technology Review Top 35 Innovators Under 35 and the "Sole 24 Ore" Top 9 Italian Innovators under 35 Awards, the 2006 Packard Foundation Fellowship and the NSF CAREER award, the 2007 NASA, and the Nanotech Briefs Nano 50(tm) Award in the category of Innovators Stellacci is the inventor of SuNS technology, a radical departure from previous methods for the fabrication of microarrays.
