Description
The roof system works in three seamless steps. At the push of a button, the front edge of the roof pivots up 12 degrees to provide clearance for the optical telescope. Next, the entire 20’ by 22’-6” roof slides back 18’, where it cantilevers off the back of the conservatory structure. In the final step, the front edge of the retractable roof pivots down to the original, horizontal position to provide an unobstructed view of the entire night sky. Push the close button, and the system silently reverses to close.

The pool enclosure consists of two fixed end sections, and a single operable roof panel, that spans between the two end sections. The total area enclosed by the retractable roof panel is approximately 107 feet by 44 feet. The operable panel consists of a wheeled frame that rides flush mounted on steel rails that run the length of the pool. When in the open position, the operable panel stacks out of the way, over the new mechanical/storage building. The rails are completely level, and the tops of the rails are flush with the pool deck.
Uni-Systems was presented with the challenge to design a mechanization system on two rounded arches, the steepest incline the company has worked with yet. Engineers designed a custom rack-and-pinion drive system to ensure the roof’s operation as it climbs the tall arches. The powerful system easily conquers the incline, driving the 800,000-pound roof panels up to their closed positions.
