United Stretch Design and Artcraft Braid Company together are diversified textile manufacturers specializing in stretch, non-stretch, round, flat, and tubular braided products serving a wide range of markets and industries world wide. Founded in 1983 by President, Manuel P. Chaves, United Stretch Design has grown and evolved from its very humble beginnings into a prominent and proud "Made in America" manufacturer. USD commenced operations with a few braiders and a winder on the third floor of an old factory building in Marlborough Massachusetts producing high quality shock cords and rings for a small number of clients. The company and client list grew steadily over the first few years and Manuel moved his fledgling operation to a larger facility located in neighboring Hudson Massachusetts. In 1989, the company expanded with the aquisition of the Putnam Braid Company of Putnum Connecticut. Putnum Braid was a well established organization with products that were complementary to those produced by USD. Manuel operated both companies each from their own facilities for the next few years and in 1991 moved Putnum Braid Company to his Hudson facility making for a far more efficient operation. As his businesses and reputation for quality and customer service grew, Manuel commissioned a new building located at 11 Bonazzoli Ave. (the present location) and moved both companies into this large state-of-the-art textile manufacturing plant. In 2007, Manuel completed the purchase of the Artcraft Braid Company of Providence Rhode Island. Artcraft Braid, another old New England textile company (established in 1936) manufacturering brougt non-stretch braids to the product line-up of the now integrated USD and Putnum Braid companies. 2009 marks another milestone for USD and Artcraft Braid as they have now completed their move of Artcraft Braid to the Hudson facility.
