Owners David and Jan Vanderbilt started outfitting customers in boots and jeans 30 years ago in Wamego, KS. When they first opened the doors in 1973, Vanderbilt's was a "smaller version of a Ben Franklin" discount department store. "Customers would ask why we didn't carry cowboy boots or jeans," David says. "We bought small lots and they sold well. Kansas has real western roots, and when the 'Urban Cowboy' came along in 1979, the fashion lemmings expanded the market we were already in."David and Jan Vanderbilt say the key to their success is listening to the customer. Vanderbilt's has expanded from a single store in Wamego, Kansas in 1973, to 7 company owned stores and 2 franchise operations in two states. Now David and Jan's two sons, Thomas and Andrew, run the seven store operation. Today, the same low discount prices and loyal customer service apply to the Vanderbilt's stores, however many of the products and brands have changed to better suit the customer's needs.
