Unfortunately, SLIT drops are not being covered by insurance carriers at this time. The reason is that the FDA has not, to date, approved the routing used for this type of treatment. Sublingually (under the tongue) is considered off-label use. Off-label means that physicians may prescribe any medication for any condition for which it is believed to be safe and effective based on supporting medical literature. The serum used to prepare your allergy drops are the same as the ones used in allergy shots. It is the route of administration that is not FDA approved, not the serum. This method of administration has been researched and performed in Europe for over 50 years. It has been shown to be a safe and effective way for allergic patients to be treated and desensitized to the antigens causing their symptoms.
