There are programs dedicated to encouraging gardeners to go native that provide some incentives beyond improving the livability of the landscape. The best known is the Backyard Habitat Certification Program, a collaboration by the National Audubon Society and Three Rivers Land Conservancy which offers monetary rewards and other perks. A friend of mine named Linda who lives here in Salem had her yard certified some years ago. It is an honor and a wonderful example of cherishing the earth.
