For more information on our meal program, call Alonna Goehner, 612-871-4363, ext.101 The Festival of Courage: A Parent’s View As the parent of a senior this year, it was especially sweet to attend and watch my daughter’s enthusiasm for one of her favorite Watershed events, the Festival of Courage, held last Wednesday. The soup cauldron went onto the wood fire early, at 8:00 a.m., and throughout the morning, each class took a turn adding vegetables and other ingredients. At lunchtime, Kristin Aitchison spoke about the intent behind the festival: reflection on personal goals of courage, while using the opportunity to find our own inner light to carry us through the dark winter months. Then Gwen Austin retold the story of stone soup with great animation. When the soup was ready, bowls of soup were ladled out and eaten with bread and apple cider as we sat out on the lawn under the brilliant September sky. Later in the day, a playful retelling of the Legend of Sir George and the Dragon was enacted, neighborhood cleanup walks beautified the area, scarecrows were made and placed in the gardens, and other activities kept the school busy until the end of the day.
