Description
Weight No More Medical Associates is the medical weight loss practice of Dr. Robert Skversky in Newport Beach and Temecula, California. The Oprah Enigma … A Weighty Question [pdf] When one thinks of Oprah, her celebrity status, immense popularity, enormous wealth, empowerment and philanthropy, few would argue that she is in a class by herself. However, when one thinks of Oprah, and her struggles with weight, her yo-yo dieting, short term successes, long term failures, feelings of frustration, self loathing and blame … On The Wellness Hour with Randy Alvarez , Dr. Skversky explains how he treats being overweight as a disease utilizing prescription medications when necessary for long-term appetite and craving control. Dr. Skversky's Mission Statement/Philosophy I began "Weight No More" in 1992 as a personalized medical weight-loss program for patients in my private family practice. My goal was to develop a program that would allow my overweight and obese patients to lose weight and maintain their weight-loss on a long term basis. The paradigm for weight loss in our country which is based on diet, exercise, and behavior modification has proven ineffective (failed miserably) for the vast majority of patients. Thus a more aggressive approach using pharmacotherapy (prescription medication) I believe is essential as an integral part of a prudent comprehensive medical weight loss program. This disease, obesity, needs to be taken seriously, treated seriously, and most importantly, treated with respect. The following statement was issued by The National Task Force on Obesity and published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) December 18, 1996. "BECAUSE OBESITY IS A DISORDER THAT CANNOT BE EXPECTED TO REMIT WITHOUT CONTINUED TREATMENT, SHORT-TERM (WEEKS OR MONTHS) TREATMENT OF OBESITY WITH DRUGS IS GENERALLY NOT WARRANTED. TREATMENT WITH MEDICATIONS WILL LIKELY NEED TO BE CONTINUED FOR YEARS, AND PERHAPS FOR THE LIFETIME OF THE PATIENT, TO SUSTAIN WEIGHT-LOSS AND IMPROVE HEALTH." Obesity is a metabolic, chronic and progressive disease with a significant genetic predisposition. Chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc. require long term drug therapy for control not cure. And the same is true for treating obesity. "Tired of Being Overweight?" It's frustrating. For years, when over the course of a lifetime, people often find themselves trapped in a seemingly hopeless and endless cycle of obesity. Even when they are able to take weight off, their success is only temporary. They put back on the pounds, many times more than they had originally lost. It is for this reason, perhaps, that commercial weight loss is a 40 billion dollar industry. People are constantly going on diets. Unfortunately, they also are constantly failing. Medical studies have confirmed that 95% of people who diet regain their weight... and more ... within three to five years. "I Can Do It" When a person fails, it becomes increasingly difficult to try again. "Weight loss" requires motivation, enthusiasm, and discipline. The goal of Weight No More is to help our patients lose weight comfortably, then maintain their weight loss forever.
