Description

ME: Hey VW, I've been wanting to talk with you. What's with the ignition coils shorting out and catching fire on the 2.5L engines? VW: Just a rumor. I heard about some isolated coils failing. Nothing major. ME: Really? I had one go up like a volcano in my service bay this year right after checking the spark plugs on a customer's 06 Beetle. VW : Well, you must have disturbed the coil. That's to be expected. The more the coil is disturbed, the more likely it can fail. ME : Yeah, I did disturb the coil. It seems removing the coil is the only way to reach the spark plug to do a tune-up. And the coil didn't just fail. It shorted out and made a huge cloud of electrical smoke in my service bay. It even burned the wiring between the ECU and the coil connector. In all my years as a mechanic I've never seen a new car just go up like that. What is the deal with those coils? Is there a recall? VW : No, it's not a recall. It's a service campaign. Not a recall. ME : Why not a recall? This seems like a safety concern if there ever was one. What's the difference? VW : A recall is forced by the government. A service campaign is volountary. VW has NEVER had a recall in the North American market.
