In 1984, Mike Kinsella bought the South Carolina assets of Word Power, a sales and service company which marketed dictating and word processing equipment, with headquarters in High Point, North Carolina. Word Systems was incorporated in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1984. Kinsella, a Vietnam-era Veteran, is a former IBM employee with over 35 years of experience in the computer industry. Delivering Choices Inherited service contracts included many Philips “MICOM” word processor customers. We decided to expand our assistance to include third-party maintenance to users of competitive word processors manufactured by IBM, Wang, Lanier, Sony, and others. Customers welcomed having a choice of service providers. Successful Growth The 1980’s brought on the “computer revolution” and the need to add desktop computer repair to our offerings. Business took off! Today Word Systems is South Carolina’s largest independent third-party computer maintenance company, servicing major hospitals, over 60 state government agencies, and numerous local and national accounts. Word Systems has three corporate locations in South Carolina: Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston.
