WDP began in 1979 as a training and networking not-for-profit organization targeted towards the needs of women and minorities. We had ongoing women’s groups, sensitivity training (for men and women), conferences, workshops and technical training with special programs running evenings and weekends for consultants. At that time colleges did not offer computer training, and Computer Sciences programs, let alone recognized degrees, were still way off in the future. WDP, leading the way, filled in the gap.It was a labor of love for all of us working at WDP. Our focus was on the people we were serving, not the bottom line. The question we asked ourselves was simply "why should a women’s organization necessarily be not-for-profit?" Wasn’t the conflict between nurturing others – at a sometimes tremendous cost in career growth and increased earnings or job satisfaction - a major issue in many women’s lives? We had reached a turning point in our organization’s growth and development. And here is what we did:At that time WDP offered an informal placement and sourcing service for IT professionals. We matched IT professionals looking for jobs with managers we knew, most of whom attended our conferences and various programs. As our reputation spread, IT professionals – men as well as women – looked to WDP for help to move their careers into high gear. Clearly WDP provided a service IT professionals wanted.
