Description

TREES AVAILABLE THIS YEAR include Leighton Green and Naylor Blue Leyland cypress, white and Virginia pine, and Carolina Sapphire Arizona cypress. We also have a few large Silver Dust Leyland cypress and a few eastern red cedar. We sold out of the Castlewellan Leyland cypress last season and it will be two or three years before we have a new supply. As in past years we will have a supply of pre-cut Fraser fir trees from Ashe County, NC. The prices of our trees will remain the same as last year. WE HAVE SEEN a lot of changes in the Christmas tree industry since we have been in operation. We began with one or two varieties suitable for Christmas trees, but now many varieties are available. We hope that in the not-too-distant future we will have a good selection of fir trees available for choose-and-cut. We are able to do this by grafting Fraser and other fir onto a hardy fir root stock that is adapted to our clay soils. The pictures below are of one of our earlier Fraser fir grafts. There is some interest in this technique by other choose-and-cut farmers outside the area adapted to the culture of Fraser fir. The Georgia Christmas Tree Growers meeting will be held in our area of the state next Sept. and our farm will host the farm tour. We are also experimenting with grafting some of the very best Virginia pine Christmas tree selections onto pine rootstock to increase the quality and uniformity of Virginia pine Christmas trees. TREES FOR TROOPS: Since 1995 the National Christmas Tree Association and state Christmas tree associations, have sponsored a “Trees for Troops ” program through the Christmas Spirit Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Through this program, families living on US military bases receive donated Christmas trees from participating tree farms and their customers throughout the US. Federal Express collects the donated trees from central farms and provides free transportation to the points of delivery at military bases. Interest in and support for this program continues to grow. Last season four collection points were serviced by Fed. Ex. This season there will be a number of additional collection points for trees to be delivered to military families and in addition a number of farms are delivering trees directly to nearby military bases. In addition to the trees for US military bases, a limited number of trees from the Midwest are sent to bases overseas. Our farm will be the collection point for trees donated by tree farms in the middle Georgia area. If you would like to purchase a tree and designate it as a donation for a military family you may do so while you are at our farm. Worthington Tree Farm will donate $5.00 of that purchase price to the Christmas Spirit Foundation. If you come to the farm after the trees have been picked up by Fed Ex you may still contribute to the Foundation online at http://www.treesfortroops.org or in person at our farm. We were pleased last year to have over 150 trees for military families collected for donation at our farm! FARM SAFETY: Safety has always been a priority at our farm and we strive to keep the cutting areas safe and attractive.
