Description

A manager asks his developers to build a new application. He believes in the "keep it simple" approach and asks them to knock out something simple. Eager to please, the developers quickly start the project without any design. Within a few weeks, developers put together a small application to meet the needs of the business. Management is pleased. The success of the first project drives the next project. Once again, developers start from scratch, writing code as quickly as possible. Again, they are eager to please their managers who continue to push them to "meet their deadlines." Over the months, new features are added as users request them. In addition, bugs are found and developers eagerly step in to fix them as well. As one bug is fixed however, other bugs are accidentally introduced by the fixes to the first bug. As the weeks turn into months, the users compile a list of nearly 100 issues. Soon, developers are no longer building new products. Now, up to 80% of their time is spent "putting out fires". Before they know it, they are now stuck in an endless cycle of "maintenance nightmares". Users are also not pleased by the lack of consistency in how applications look and feel. But how could this have happened? Could it have been avoided?
