Zwahlen's Ice Cream & Chocolate Company is named in honor of my great-great-great grandfather, John Zwahlen, who was born in Bern, Switzerland on August 14, 1851, long after his family had fallen from the privileged standing they'd earned in the 1300's. Poverty led his parents to agree to give their only child to a wealthy, childless couple with the understanding that when the couple died, Grandpa Zwahlen would inherit their land and possessions. Every day "Uncle Christian" brought Grandpa Zwahlen with him to work the fields and milk the cows. However, when Grandpa Zwahlen was just nine years old, following the unexpected death of his adopted mother, Christian disinherited him and gave him to a school for orphans. In 1875, religious convictions brought him and his sweetheart across the ocean to settle in Utah. There they were married, and there, in a dirt-floored cellar dug into a hillside, my great-great grandmother Mary Zwahlen (Behunin) was born. Calling on the experiences of his youth, and with diligent effort, he built a successful farming and dairy business. Recalling another aspect of his Swiss heritage, a love of ice cream. Grandpa became known for making ice cream in a hand-cranked freezer, utilizing the cream and fruits produced on his farm. Like Grandpa Zwahlen, I love really good ice cream, as do all the members of my family. Zwahlen's is the best we have found and we enjoy it often in large generous quantities.
