Description

Glass Paintings - Small Series dimensions: 11"x14" mixed media on glass Process/Artists Statement The pieces in this series were created over a one year period from spring 1996 to spring 1997. The original idea for painting on glass came from my research into the works of Kandinsky where I learned about his glass paintings. Kandinsky's works on glass were the result of experimentation with an old Russian folk craft of painting scenes on glass. My works use the idea of glass as a ground/surface for painting in a more scientific way. In my quest for ever more vibrant and rich color I have sought out a surface whose spectral wavelength would not interfere with the color as it is applied. Glass provides the perfect medium; by its transparent nature it cannot absorb any of the spectral wavelength of the color - consequently the essence of the color remains exactly as it is mixed or applied directly from it's source. Each panel was created in tandem and then finished sequentially. There are many layers on each piece that were applied over time. As ideas began to develop on the glass they were taken to completion from the back - layers were applied over existing marks from the back and not viewed until the composition was completed from behind. The results were spontaneous and random, where the process of creation provided the methodology for keeping the work an unknown until completed and revealed from the front. No marks were made once the piece was viewed from the front. These web site representations are not completely indicative of the actual pieces. Much of the depth and irridescenes created in the layering are lost through the scans as well as spectral shift due to electronic conversion processes.
