After exhibiting in the national ISA show for many years, and walking the show for many more, it is amazing to see how the ready availability of information (i.e. the Internet) amongst other things has dramatically changed the landscape of what these show are all about. What once was ‘the Instrumentation event’ (typically in Houston) the national ISA show has fallen victim to the fact that people simply do not attend national trade shows for the reasons they did 10-20 years ago. The need for information, education, and discovery of new techologies are as close as your desktop keyboard — making the time and expense formula to attend a ‘national’ show a tough formula to justify. That being said, there is merit, though, in the resurgence of ‘local tabletop’ ISA shows – where the venue is close, the content more localized and focused, and the costs (and time away from work) managable. These local events are becoming a great alternative to get some free technology training, a hands on look at the latest products, and a forum to meet with many of your peers and business partners in a one day venue. So the next time you’re contemplating whether or not to attend the ‘big show’, take a look at your local chapter and see what they may be cooking up. For us in Southern California, we have a bunch of these events planned and going on right now — with standing room only seminars, packed exhibit halls, and fulfilled attendees. For example, later this month the ISA San Diego Section will host the I&C Expo San Diego with a roster full of exhibitors and several seminars and class events including PLC training and LabVIEW training. Crowds are expects to beat last year’s record turn out, and the show organizers continue to get exhibitors wanting to sign up. Another example is the wildly popular Automation OC Expo Training and Career Fair which is more commonly know as Oktoberfest - where the state of the art in automation is mixed withlots of food, fun, and comradarie. In theend, it’s all about value to the attendee, and the ‘good ‘ole local table top’ shows are adpating to provide that value — and some fun, too! Is it just me, or are the national shows fizzling out for good?
