A city rich with culture, history and creativity, Seattle, Washington offers students a unique opportunity to explore these aspects of the city in an engaging way. Seattle is one of the rainiest cities in all of the United States. Seattle as a city was settled in 1851 by Arthur Denny and his crew. This was known as the Denny Party, most settlers came to Alki Point in 1851. They actually called the spot New York. Seattle was named for Chief Sealth meaning high status man. Seattle was not really involved in many of the wars that were fought in the United States, but they did experience the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 that destroyed most of Seattle's business district. Then there was the famous Klondike Gold Rush, this is what made Seattle a huge transportation center, it was the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. Seattle was the home to the very first general strike in the country which was referred to as the Seattle General Strike of 1919. Seattle has many great things to see and do. One thing that Seattle is famous for is their Space Needle - other cities have even copied it. There is a replica of the Space Needle in Las Vegas called the Stratosphere. The Space needle is the largest building on the West Coast. Another of the Seattle landmarks is the Smith Tower which is the oldest skyscraper in Seattle. It had began construction in 1910 and was ready to be opened in 1914. It is actually the 4th tallest building in the world outside of Manhattan. Teenagers will find Seattle great because it is home of the grunge. Nirvana, a popular music group, came from Seattle. One thing that is so cool that has no educational value at all but your students will love it is the Fremont Troll or the Troll Under The Bridge. The troll is carved out and is set underneath the bridge. The troll was inspired by the children’s classic story Three Billy Goats Gruff. There’s much more to Seattle than meets the eye, including a variety of museums, galleries, festivals and cultural experiences that aren’t to be missed. Visit The Museum of Flight for a captivating look at aviation history, from the Personal Courage Wing to the original Boeing Headquarters. Students will have the opportunity to explore various historical aviation exhibits from one of the largest air and space museums in the world when you visit the Museum of Flight. The Experience Music Project should be the next stop on the itinerary. Students will be exposed to various hands-on exhibits and activities, including the Guitar Gallery where you will learn about the history of the guitar as well as how it evolved into the instrument it is today. In the Sound Lab, you can immerse yourself in the world of music by learning how to play an instrument, or channel your inner DJ with the DJ Hallway. For a lesson in history, Seattle houses one of the most comprehensive history museums around. The Museum of History and Industry affords a detailed look into the past 150 years of Seattle history, including numerous artifacts, historic documents, films and oral histories of the great city.
