Description

The genus Drosophila, as currently defined, is paraphyletic. A proposal to split the genus has been made, but runs into the problem that Drosophila melanogaster should be renamed Sophophora melanogaster. To avoid that, an application to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has been made. The case has, as expected, generated much interest.
