Last night I had the great pleasure to see the movie Get Low , starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray. It's the story of an elderly hermit who wants to stage his own funeral--while he's still alive to attend it. The movie offers a fascinating opportunity for us to think through complex constructions like the images and stories we hold true for ourselves and for each other. We get to think about all the gaps we fill with our own imaginations. What do people say about us? What do people think about us? And how is that a creative factor--either in our world, or theirs? Working in social services and understanding about things like projections and such opens up the realm of story in a new way. Are you appearing as a real person in your own interactions with others, or are you taking on a role in which they've cast you--good guy, villian, disappointment, hero? And who, ultimately, do we need to release (and be released by) as we move on to new stages of life. Henri Nouwen wrote about nearing death (or so he thought after a terrible accident) and feeling a sense of inward pressure to seek release from others who hold incorrect images of him. How much do you feel the need to explore the image of you that lives in others minds? Or are you happy to exist within your own reality, knowing others are swimming in their own?
