SFA is dedicated to working with farmworkers for change but we will not act on their behalf, instead taking our lead from the workers themselves . Farmworkers' daily experience of working in sweatshop conditions in the fields puts them in the best position to build movements to change those conditions—and the larger power imbalances they stem from. In turn, we take responsibility for organizing our communities and colleagues to understand—and act on—our role in this movement.

Alexis Herrera (20, Austin, TX) is a queer Chicana activist from Texas. She is currently attending the University of Texas at Austin where she is an undergraduate in Mexican-American Studies. While in Austin she has been involved with Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/a de Aztlan (MEChA), the Student Labor Action Project, The Youth Liberation Network and Austin Indymedia. While working with these organizations she became involved with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Student/Farmworker Alliance during the Taco Bell Boycott and has been connected with them ever since.

Maya Zazhil Fernández (18; Chicago, IL; maya@sfalliance.org ) is a Chicago native living and organizing out of the Pilsen-La Villita hood. Growing up immersed in music and dance, she is dedicated to playing, learning and teaching the Son Jarocho fandango tradition of Veracruz, Mexico, as well as the Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena. As part of the groups Jarochicanos, Son del Viento and BomPleneras, and through teaching in Son Chiquitos, she continually experiences the power of tradition and culture in community struggle and development and in educating children and youth.

Below is a selected bibliography of books, articles, theses and other resources about the CIW, SFA, farmworker history and related topics. We provide these resources to help facilitate research, to help allies continue the process of developing collective analysis and to inspire further reflection on these topics and beyond.

Kandace Vallejo (25, Carbondale, IL ) is a Xicana and a graduating senior at Southern Illinois University, majoring in History but focusing her studies and research on education as a tool for liberation. She's worked with SFA since 2005, and has served on the SC since 2006, but has been a fan since long before, and during her days working with the Student Environmental Action Coalition, helped to build a stronger bridge of solidarity between the youth environmental justice movement and the CIW and SFA.
