Description
In Draw Magazine #16 , Howard Chaykin said that he reinvents himself as an artist every couple of years. It seems to me that all commercial artists, regardless of the art they create, should take this idea to heart, since technology introduces radical shifts in how the work is created, perceived, and received on a regular basis. The question raised, of course, is how should a commercial artist go about reinventing themselves. My next series of blog articles will be an attempt to address just that. I’ll also be taking a look at the relationship between the commercial artist and today’s entertainment industries, and the role of technology in the creation and distribution of the artist’s work. Finally, I’ll attempt to look at all of this through the lens of today’s economy in an effort to see what’s financially feasible for artists who publish and distribute their own work. I’ll also be adding links to a resource page for writer-artists throughout the series (an idea borrowed from Caleb Monroe ‘s excellent collection of writer resources ) and going on the occasional tangent when necessary about professional minutiae, such as how to properly write off research expenses.
