GOOD QUESTION! Our overall mandate is to coordinate EMS in the region and there s lots more to that then meets the eye! This is a large, very rural area, and portions of it are very isolated. When EMS is needed, it can be a challenge to get there promptly with properly trained personnel, to provide the care that is called for, and transport the patient to the nearest appropriate facility. Just for example, in Hamilton County it s an average of 50 miles from point of patient encounter to the nearest hospital! And keep in mind, that's an average. Actual distances, depending on the agency location, range from 25 miles to an incredible 71 miles to the nearest hospital facility (that's the longest in the state!). Everyone is familiar with the sight of an ambulance vehicle, its lights flashing and siren sounding, on the way to an emergency. We ve all seen them in real life - and on TV too! People in need of people that s the story of EMS. Remember though, that somehow the people of EMS have to be recruited, they have to be trained, they have to be provided with the necessary protocols for treatment and transportation of patients involved in various types of incidents. Their work has to be properly documented, and the data generated by their work has to be reviewed with a view to continuous quality improvement, and so on.
