Carnegie Hall officially opened in New York City on May 5, 1891, with a concert conducted by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Built with money donated by Andrew Carnegie, the hall was the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra before it moved to Lincoln Center. When plans were made to tear the building down, Maestro Richard Schulze, Chairman Emeritus of the American Conservatory of Music, led a media campaign and fight to stop the demolition. This led Issac Stern to question how anything could be done to save the building, because he felt it was impossible.
