The National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA) was founded in July 1989 to develop and administer the certification process for AAs in the United States. The NCCAA consists of Commissioners representing ASA, AAAA, and at-large physician and AA members.

It all began in 1826 when Western Reserve College was founded in Hudson, Ohio , about 30 miles southeast of where campus stands today. The college, which was the first in northern Ohio, took its name from the surrounding region (known at that time as the Western Reserve of Connecticut) and emphasized standards, like the classics , in its curriculum.Yet it stood out in the mid- and late-19th century as one of only a few institutions that sought innovation and embraced the sciences. The professional organization for AAs is the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants (AAAA). AAAA was founded in 1975 and serves the various educational, advocacy and national organizational needs of the AA profession.

Located in downtown Cleveland, the Medical Department of Western Reserve College (also known as Cleveland Medical College) was founded in 1843 . By 1865 , the medical school's graduates included Nancy Talbot Clarke, the second woman to graduate from an American medical school, six of the first seven female physicians in the United States and the third African American to graduate from medical school.

Students at the DC location spend the majority of their first year at the nearby Washington Hospital Center. Being immersed in clinical learning is a "hands on" experience in which the student works directly with AAs and attending anesthesiologists in a state-of-the-art facility. DC students are regularly visited by the Program Director during teaching sessions. Rotations are constructed around the specific areas of medicine, basic science, and anesthesia that help prepare the student to become a well-trained anesthetist.
