Excerpts from "Bivouac of The Dead" by Theodore O'Hara Upon his retirement, General Douglas McArthur stated "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away." The names of those who served their county, albeit in time of war or peace, should never be allowed to simply "fade away". This site is dedicated to the veterans of Rock County. The primary objective is to create a photo index and history of veterans buried in Rock County. Time, the environment and mother nature have taken a toll on many of the older stones. The Oakhill Veterans Cemetery has been fully photographed (Sept 2007) however not all images are online yet. The G.A.R. sections at Oakhill and Mt. Olivet are fully indexed and online. The index also includes G.A.R. and Spanish American war veterans buried in other sections of both Oakhill and Mt. Olivet. Most G.A.R. veterans and some Spanish American War Veterans, have printable service histories. This winter the task is to get all the photos for Oakhill National Cemetery online as well as find more of the older stones at both of those cemeteries. Spring of 2008 will start the search for older stones and monuments throughout Rock County. Civil War
