Garden Center Services

Description

Our organization, established in 1956, has served the surrounding community since its inception and has had the same mission; doing everything in our power to support people with developmental disabilities. Garden Center Services was formed as a response to the local school authority's lack of placement for people with developmental disabilities. Since there was no specialized programming for people with developmental disabilities, Garden Center Services became one of the first of its kind in the south suburbs of Illinois. The service are included southern Chicago, Stickney, Burbank, Oak Lawn, Bridgeview, and Bedford Park, but has expanded many times over since the 1950s to include Evergreen Park, Palos Hills, and Orland Park, just to name a few. From its humble beginnings above the garage at Reavis High School, Garden Center Services has continued to grow and prosper. As the word of the specialized programs and schooling grew, so did the enrollment. It was in 1960 that the organization had outgrown its garage loft classroom, and decided to temporarily relocate to a meeting room housed at the local roller rink in Oak Lawn until their vision was at hand; a building created specifically for the education and socialization of people with developmental disabilities.
