Description
Intelligent Television produces television, films, and video. The company works with many of world’s leading directors, producers, and cinematographers in its productions, joining them together with leading historians, scientists, journalists, policymakers, librarians, curators, and other scholars and activists committed to education worldwide. Funding for Intelligent Television productions comes from philanthropic foundations, government agencies, corporate underwriters, corporate advertisers, and investors. With this support, Intelligent Television has also begun building a nonfiction studio and production network for cultural and educational institutions keen to engage with the moving image. Intelligent Television is producing programs on the history of the American South; the nature of memory; the history of American comedy; the American labor movement; war and foreign policy; communications policy; open access to science and medicine; and other projects in association with leading cultural and educational institutions. Featured productions include: " Within the Law ” is a public and university education project that recreates a lost 1917 feature film. Over 85 percent of early American cinema is lost--and along with it much of early 20th-century American history, culture, and society. This project tells the public and students about early cinema by inviting them to participate in the reconstruction of a 1917 film based on its surviving clues--the Broadway play it was based on, the musical score (recently discovered) that was composed specifically for the film, contemporary reviews from the press, production stills, and other films from its once-vibrant production company, Brooklyn-based Vitagraph Studios. The project is producing three distinct pieces of media--the recreated two-hour-long movie; an interactive online environment where users learn about early American film and can upload their own contribution to Within the Law’s visual and musical reconstruction; and a documentary about the film, film production in New York in the 1910s and 1920s, and this process of film paleontology and the historical reconstruction of media.
