Welcome to the Dallas Lutheran School website! The purpose of English 4 is to develop college-level reading, writing and critical thinking skills through the study of major literary movements in British Literature. This course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of drama, poetry, prose, and long and short fiction. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider each work’s structure, style and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the author’s use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone. Writing will focus on reflection, analysis, and interpretation of literature, while research will extend learning into critical theory and cultural context. Students will demonstrate proficiency in writing clearly, concisely, and correctly while continuing to expand their vocabulary to enable them to comprehend college-level texts.
The purpose of English 2 is to develop students’ critical reading, writing, and thinking skills through close readings of classic texts that explore the human condition from the ancient to the modern world. Students will explore multiple genres, including epic, drama, poetry, short stories, novels, and non-fiction prose, deepening their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. Students will learn to recognize each work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as the author’s use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Writing will focus on research, analysis, exposition, and creative response that enhances understanding of texts and develops skills needed for upper level courses. Students will study vocabulary designed to improve reading comprehension as well as to prepare for standardized testing. Grammar study will be integrated directly with composition skills to further develop clarity in all forms of discourse.
