Description
From 1957 to 1962, MOCON's original infrared H2O technology was developed by Les Demorest, et al, a physicist working at General Mills, Inc. in Minneapolis, MN. Soon after, Mr. Demorest founded "Demorest Instruments Co." to develop and sell the first dynamic Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) permeation instrument, the IRD-2C.After going public as Modern Controls, Inc. in 1968, the Company developed an O2TR permeation technology with a Hersch cell. Understanding the permeation rate of oxygen molecules through flexible materials is very important in the food packaging industry, among other industries. In 1971, the sale of the first OX-TRAN, model 100, an instrument that determines the rate of oxygen molecules permeating through a barrier film was made. Modern Controls' trademark MOCONA new carbon dioxide transmission measuring system, the PERMATRAN C-IV, was introduced in 1982. One of the most common applications for this instrument was to measure carbon dioxide transmission through plastic, carbonated beverage bottles. Many bottlers are and have been using one - and two-liter plastic containers as a cost-effective alternative to glass bottling because of the high expense of cleaning, sterilizing and refilling recycled glass bottles. However, plastic bottles have an inherent problem - carbon dioxide passes rapidly through plastic, causing the beverage to lose its carbonation and become ``flat.
