The Oakland Black Fire Fighter Association was established in 1973 by African American members of the Oakland Fire Department. It is because of the persistence and determination of a few individuals that we forge forward in our continued efforts to create diversity in the fire service. Proudly, The Oakland Fire Department is one of the most diverse organizations in the bay area.“All that I am I owe, I live Eternally in the Red”. Many members of the department have been student of a very successful tutorial “Thursday Night Class” and now volunteer their time to reach back and help others. In fact, 50% of members of the Oakland Black Firefighters association are alumni to the tutorial class. These same men and women have volunteered their time to assist participants in achieving a career in the fire service. Many of these participants have become Oakland Fire Department members and others have joined departments throughout the state.Additionally, promoted personnel contribute towards the career development of members eligible to compete for promotional exams. This is accomplished in a classroom setting off-duty and organized by Oakland fire Department Lieutenants, Captains, and Chiefs. These members developed an Assessment Center Workshop which meets on Thursdays for 6-8 weeks prior to a promotional exam. The officers dedicate their time during these weeks to impart valuable information which has lead participants to success.Further, the Oakland Black Firefighter Association works collaboratively with community-based organizations to provided the added services required to meet the needs of members in the community. We have worked with Oakland High Schools to offer scholarships to students interested in pursuing college education. Also, those interested in attending paramedic schools have an opportunity to compete for stipends. Most recently, our research and development committee has challenged itself with creating a junior cadet program for middle school youth.In summary, the mission of the organization is recruitment, training, upward mobility and community involvement. I invite you to join us in these efforts in order to effect change nationally in the fire service.
