Description

The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program offers four sequential clinical nursing courses which students complete over two years. Each course integrates classroom learning with simulation laboratory activities and faculty supervised clinical experiences to prepare students to provide holistic nursing care to individuals, families, and groups. The nursing program follows Patricia Benner’s novice to expert model of skill acquisition and self-care framework, faculty guide students to develop the capacity to provide increasingly complex nursing care.

July 15, 2013 River Valley Community College welcomes Dr. Alicia Harvey-Smith as its 7th president. Dr. Harvey-Smith comes to River Valley with twenty-five years of experience in higher education. Her previous position was vice president for student affairs at Baltimore City Community College in Baltimore, Maryland, a public institution serving 19,000 students annually.

The College and our Keene Academic Center are very proud of the communities in which we reside and serve. Together, with our community partners, we are exploring ways to improve the lives of those who call these communities their home by providing quality services and opportunities that will enrich lives. Education is an experience, and a gift that will go everywhere with you.

This course provides opportunities for students to begin to use the nursing process and implement the registered nurse roles of provider, communicator, teacher, manager of care, and member of the profession. The main focus of the course is learning how to provide holistic nursing care to individuals with common mental health disorders and medical surgical alterations in health. Concepts related to the health-wellness continuum, therapeutic nutrition, pharmacology, and lifespan development that were introduced in Nursing Care I are expanded upon. Students learn medical surgical content related to neurologic, vascular, orthopedic, hematologic, urinary, oncology, and the immune system. Mental health topics of substance abuse, stress, anxiety, somatiform, dissociative, sleep, and affective disorders are introduced, along with their physiologic impact. Based on Patricia Benner’s novice to expert nursing model of skill attainment, students continue to develop critical thinking skills, and begin to apply those skills to problem solve within the practice environment.
