Description

The Work First program is a partnership between the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Halifax County Department of Social Services with the purpose of using the Chamber's solid standing in the business community to ge nerate jobs for Work First participants through the Work First Coordinator position. The focus is to identify employers who are willing to provide opportunities for Work First participants and for the program to remain employer-responsive by meeting the labor needs of businesses.

The Roanoke Valley's work environment consists of a strong industrial base. The area's history as an industrial community can be traced back almost 100 years. Today, paper continues to be one of the Roanoke Valley's major manufactured products, along with molded plastics, wood products, and fabricated metal. The area also has a strong agricultural tradition and is one of the state's leading producers of cotton and peanuts.
