Safer Sleep Limited was founded in New Zealand in 1997 and has provided peri-operative safety solutions to the healthcare industry since 1999. The New Zealand entity merged with a US entity to form Safer Sleep LLC in 2004 with its head office in Nashville Tennessee. The company is privately owned with the majority of shareholders being New Zealanders. During 2008, the SAFERsleep System was installed in the United Kingdom as part of a study being carried out by the National Patient Safety Foundation in collaboration with the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The System was installed at Wrexham Hospital, North Wales and Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. In 2009, the company opened an office in Cambridge, United Kingom. A team of people provide sales and post sales support in the United Kingdom. Safer Sleep’s products have managed over 350,000 anaesthetics to date in mobile, day stay and in-patient hospital environments. In the USA the FDA granted SAFERsleep pre-market clearance in November of 2005, the SAFERsleep System is the first peri-operative barcode based anaesthesia record system to achieve this status. The SAFERsleep System has been designed by anaesthetists for anaesthetists. It is easy to learn and use, so it is rapidly adopted at installed sites. Patient safety starts with the preparation of drugs and continues through to drug allergy cross checks during the anaesthetic. The accurate time-related anaesthetic patient records produced by SAFERsleep OR provide the post operative staff with a clear picture of the patient’s anaesthetic management. While extensively field-tested, Safer Sleep’s products are based on academic research.
