Sounds Great began in the infancy of the Mobile Electronics Era out of the trunk of a ’76 El Dorado. Securing installation work (and equipment sales) through classified ads led to an installation service for non-installing retailers. Soon came car dealer installation work. By the mid 80’s we opened our one and only retail location in Forked River NJ.Back then, the average car stereo had 2-3 watt output, (8watt peak!) and the high-end units had a whopping 7 watts. CD players were still on the wait-and-see list. Not only were they prohibitively expensive, but they had no amplifier (sold separately), no tuner (sold separately) and they were sensitive to dust, moisture, heat, cold, vibrations, and dirty discs. Amplifiers back then were more than likely to consist of a cheap in-dash reverb/booster unit. One day our salesman came in and asked us to listen to this box. It was this huge monstrosity with two 8” woofers. He called it a Pyle driver, and said they were starting to catch on. Who could have foreseen the days when pairs of 12” woofers would be commonplace? Or in-dash Video, remote car starters and vehicle navigation systems.From the beginning we wanted to offer as much as we possibly could, both in product categories, and multiple brands within the category.
