Two Star Dog Inc. is a Berkeley, California-based women's and men's clothing manufacturer. The company was founded in 1992 by Allan and Steven Boutrous, brothers who came from North Dakota with big dreams. They were joined by designer Stella Carakasi in 1993 and the trio owns and operates the company today.Steven and Allan began by manufacturing jeanswear from hemp, an eco-friendly fiber that is grown with little or no chemical pesticides, yet boasts excellent durability. With Stella's help, Two Star Dog became the first American company to develop and market complete sportswear lines made from this fabric. Even the company's name is based on the fiber, tracing its origins to African tribes who used hemp in rituals under the canis major and canis minor star constellations...hence "Two Star Dog." The company's production grew very quickly and so did their knowledge of garment-dyeing, where clothing is cut and sewn from unprocessed, natural fabric and then dyed to order. Over the years the company has attained a reputation for superior quality clothing in the eco-community and in mainstream boutiques.
