Poverty Data Released by Census Bureau The U.S. Census Bureau released its annual Current Population Survey earlier today. The survey reports national and state level data for poverty, income and health insurance. • The national poverty rate was 14.3% in 2009, up from 13.2% in 2008. • In Kansas, 374,000 people were living below the federal poverty level in 2009. The 2009 poverty rate was 13.7%, up from 12.7% in 2008. • In Missouri , 926,000 people were living below the federal poverty level in 2009, a 15.5% poverty rate. The rate in 2008 was 13.3%. • In Kansas and Missouri together, an additional 174,000 people fell into poverty in 2009. • Children fare worse than adults. The poverty rate for Kansans under age 18 was 18%. Missouri children had a 23.8% poverty rate. For more information on Kansas and Missouri poverty see the UCS Human Service Data Sheet . Local Data to be Released Later This Month The Census Bureau will release the annual American Community Survey (ACS) on September 28, 2010. ACS provides annual detailed data for geographic areas of more than 65,000 people and, beginning this year, multi-year estimates for cities/counties of all sizes. United Community Services will provide periodic updates based on new data over the next few months. Poverty in Johnson County is the featured topic for Let's Talk Issues, a program sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Johnson County, the Kansas City Star and Johnson County Community College. UCS Executive Director, Karen Wulfkuhle, Dr. Judy Martin, Director of Special Services of Gardner Edgerton School District, Deborah Collins, Director of Johnson County Human Services and Terrie Van Zandt Travis, Executive Director of Head Start of Shawnee Mission presented their views on growing poverty, especially the increase in child poverty. Jim Sullinger of the Kansas City Star moderated the discussion. The show will be broadcast each Wednesday through November 10 at 7:00 pm on Time Warner cable channel 17.
