Description
The cost to your business of not doing enough to monitor the safety compliance of suppliers? Devastating. I often point out that there is a fast-food restaurant that I subconsciously do not frequent since an e.coli outbreak...that occurred in the 1980s! Its just in my head, and without even thinking about it, I make other choices. The Peanut Corporation of America, a sizable business that provided 2.5% of Americas processed peanuts, was forced to permanently halt operations after a massive salmonella outbreak traced back to the company. It can mean everything. Back to the egg recall: it is now apparent that eggs were contaminated in facilities that had not been audited recently. Conditions in and around those facilities were atrocious; had they been held to any reasonable standard, we wouldnt have seen the recall of nearly half a billion eggs, at tremendous cost to folks like you. (That cost is hard to measure just yet, but whats clear is that egg prices have risen 40% in an attempt to cover it. The cost of the recall itself is dwarfed by lost business for egg producers -- the good ones and the bad ones.) So, could anything have been done to prevent it? Yes. Most of you arent yet using iCiXs patented Validated Certification software, but here is how it works: 1. The software provides you with a simple way to determine which of your suppliers are in compliance with standards you have set, and which are not. 2. When a supplier is out of compliance (lacking a test, audit, or documentation), you can easily request that the supplier remedy the situation. For a test or audit, the supplier can choose from a list of labs or auditors that are acceptable to you. 3. A workflow system tracks progress on your request, and informs you when the request is complete. When it is complete, it will be posted to iCiX directly by the auditor or lab (and not by the supplier), thereby virtually eliminating the possibility of error. In short, had everyone been using the iCiX Validated Certification system, the proper tests and audits would have been performed in a timely fashion -- and we wouldnt have had this problem. Period.
