Anthrax concerns have been on the mind of many Butte County citizens. The Butte County Public Health Department does not believe there is any significant risk to citizens of Butte County. We are monitoring reports and investigations around the State and locally. Our country has been enduring difficult times since September 11th. Most recently the country is threatened by Anthrax terrorism. Three news agencies on the East Coast have documented Anthrax cases associated with their work place. Also, the US Senate has had a significant exposure through a contaminated letter through the mail. Other threats are being investigated. One death to Anthrax has occurred and the other few cases are being successfully treated. A few exposed contacts have had confirmed Anthrax spores detected on their bodies. Many contacts are being given preventive antibiotics. Anthrax is a bacterium that is predominantly found in the soil. It produces spores that are very resistant to decontamination and can remain viable for years. Butte County has had Anthrax cases in both animals and humans in past years. The most recent human case was in the 1970's. Animal anthrax has occurred more frequently. Anthrax is difficult to use as an effective weapon of war. The Butte County Public Health Department has been in close daily contact with the State Health Department and is receiving updates on investigations from across the nation.
