“New Year, New Beginning” is the theme for the new administrative team at Forbes Road Career and Technology School in Monroeville. Forbes serves nine sending school districts which include: Allegheny Valley, East Allegheny, Gateway, Highlands, Penn Hills, Plum Riverview, Wilkinsburg, and Woodland Hills as well as CCAC Middle College and other Private schools. “There are a 17 programs offered here which include Collision Repair Technology, Commercial Art / Computer Graphics, Computer Business Information Technology, Computer Networking Engineering Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Art, Dental Careers ,Diesel Technology ,Electrical Technology, Emergency Response Technology, Health Science Technology, HVAC Multimedia , and Precision Machining Technology along with Apprenticeship and academics coupled with job placement.” said new Administrative Director Paul Balint. Balint, the former Assistant Director, School-To-Work Coordinator and Machining Instructor at the school who lives in West Mifflin, and new administrators Georgiana Gamberoni and Jeffrey Geesey, hope to bring the campus, which serves about 800 students, in line with curricula that exists in those school districts, initiate new programs and help increase Pennsylvania System of School Assessment scores and lastly inspire students to get to school. Attendance is one of the bigger issues, according to administrators. Jeff Geesey, the Assistant Director and a former welding technology instructor with the Indiana County Technology Center wants the students to realize that if they want to learn about business and industry, they must attend school and minimize the their absenteeism. If you miss days at school you are inclined to miss days at work. Attendance is specifically important at Forbes which has a 58 percent placement rate in the employment field. Also another 30 percent of students move on to some type of post-secondary school, either college or some type of apprenticeship or training program said Gamberoni, the Supervisor of Vocational Instruction, who used to teach Digital Media Technology at Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. The change here at Forbes will include rigorous academics which will be stressed predominantly to assure PSSA test scores at schools that send their students to Forbes will improve and another reason being business and industry require their employees to read manuals, complete forms, etc and have critical thinking skills Balint said. Forbes will emphasize improving scores on tests by the National Occupational Competency Institute, Gamberoni said. Forbes will be looking at other regional and state High Priority occupations that are in demand in the business and industry world. Balint said. There are so many other opportunities available that include “Dual Enrollment” in which students can take classes at Community College of Allegheny County after school and receive credits for both high school and college, Balint said. The goal is to simultaneously link secondary and postsecondary education and have a seamless transition so students can succeed in post-secondary school and the workplace, he said.
