Foster's Market first opened its doors in May of 1990. It was the vision of Sara Foster, a caterer and former chef for Martha Stewart, to introduce great wines, specialty grocery items, fine coffees and freshly prepared home-cooked food to the small southern community of Durham, North Carolina. Although the market was not intended to be "dine-in," there were a few tables with mismatched chairs that Sara picked up at yard sales and flea markets. When she noticed customers hovering over each other, looking for a place to sit during Sunday brunch, she decided to replace some of the grocery shelves with more funky tables and chairs. Not only were customers coming to Foster's for what Sara was making in-house: baked goods, coffee drinks, soups, salads, dinner entrees and weekend brunches; they were coming for the inviting atmosphere that she had created.
